The last few days has seen an explosion of young Blue Tits in the garden. Sadly none of our garden nestboxes were used this year but there's obviously been plenty of boxes in other parts of the village that have been successful.
Last week, I was alerted by a lot of frantic chirping coming from one of our trees. The source of the noise was soon discovered to be a family of very noisy and demanding Blue Tits. The poor parent birds were back and forth to the feeders most of the day, all the while being shouted at by the youngsters for their share. A single chick can eat around 100 caterpillars a day. An average brood will have 10 chicks and they take between 18 and 21 days to fledge so that is a lot of caterpillars! Once they've fledged they will soon be introduced by the adults to the wonderful world of the garden feeders.
